Can you define DOWNLOADING?

How do we get to the easyC programing software in a FAST and EASY manner?

OK, you have made an semi-cool program and your robot is turned on with the orange cable connected to your computer and robot. Now what? How do we get it from the page we see in easyC to our robot? What icon or menu choice to you need to click on?

Compile? What does this have to do with robotics and microprocessors? Is this pretty much the same as build as in the build and download icon or menu selection in easyC?

What programing language are we learning?

Whenever you are programing your robot it should be ___________________ to keep it from starting up and crashing off your lab bench

Hun... While Loop? What is this?

Speaking of while loop what is the statement bit all about? Would you be able to write one?

If your robot is doing tasks that you are not directing with your remote control it is most likely caused by another team using the same remote and receiver frequency or changeable crystal sets that you are using.

It is OK to leave your batteries in your robot kit overnight when you are not using them.

Will the transmitter antennae will only work when FULLY extended? Can we use only 1/2 way out in the classroom?

You should protect your expensive transmitter by putting it into your robot kit container in the original box or a bag. True or False?

Speaking of microprocessor, what device is this on our robot?

What is the receiver on our robot? What does it do? What does it look like?

What is the transmitter? Could you identify it if you saw one?

If you were asked what all the numbers in the arcade 2 motor easyC window were could you explain what they were for???

The department head of Scituate public schools science and technology programs requires each student to have a science/technology journal for each class. These will be used next year in robotics and by 8th graders next year if they choose to take robotics as an elective. You will receive a grade for your science/robotics journal. This is a good place to take notes, keep track of accomplishments, answer DO NOW questions and so on.

Needed by the first class of next week: Assigned Dec. 5th or 6th

Prices vary from under a buck to just over $4.00 Some students have gotten them at Dollar stores, Building 19 and Ocean State Job lot for under a buck! Family having finatuial issues? This homework assignment will = 50 points or same as quiz grade
Late = zero
After Wed. No composition book = detention until you choose to get a book
Pen and #2 pencil for every class

Your robotics journal:

Have the cover decorated - we will do this in class
Contain a 4 page table of contents - 1st 4 pages - (Most will be by date) - we can start in class
Have all pages after table of contents NUMBERED on the bottom right hand page - Do after above!
Should only have writing on one side of the page
Can have forms, handouts, charts and etc glued or stapled in place
May have goals for the week listed
WILL have a synopsis/overview/review of the weeks activities or tasks accomplished for the week
Will have 3 things/procedures/skills you have learned during the week
May contain a section for notes or you can keep a separate notebook for notes. I think it will be easier for you to just put all notes in your robotics journal

Be ready for a safety test sometime next week or the first part of the week after. AGAIN..... since it will be an open NOTE test..... SHOULD YOU BE TAKING NOTES?????

How are your NOTES for the up coming safety test the 1st part of the week of 12-19? PARENTS HAVE YOU CHECK YOUR CHILD"S NOTES? Some students are choosing to take notes in their robotics journal and may not have these at home. It always shocks me how few kids take notes!

While the VEX development system itself is not inherently dangerous to use, anyone working with metal parts and tools needs to have a safe attitude and work in safe ways. The most important aspect of safety is to think safety at all times. It is well-known in workshops that safety starts with being aware of your work space and being sensitive to dangerous behaviors and materials. Purposefully use safety gear and follow safe practices to insure your own well-being.

Safety is not just about following rules, it’s about doing work in a way that is safe. Most of the time if you think you are behaving unsafely, you are. Stop and think before you act. The most important safety tool of all is your head. Remember: your attitude affects your behavior. If you have a positive attitude you will likely exhibit safe behavior. A negative attitude toward safety will cause carelessness, inattention, and injury.

Before working on your robot, go through these steps in your mind:

Do I have necessary safety gear such as safety glasses and hearing protection?

Is this the safest way to do this task?

Am I using the correct tools? Using the wrong tool is frequently more dangerous than using the correct one.

Are the parts secured correctly when cutting or bending? Use a vise or clamp – not your fingers.

Safety Rules:

No horseplay! Workshops are no place for irresponsible behavior such as running around, “swordfights,” throwing parts, or pushing people.

Always wear safety glasses when cutting, using tools, running robot or bending structural parts. ANYTIME in an active and/or working robotics lab!

Wear safety glasses, even if you wear normal eyeglasses. Unless you have had them specially made, eyeglasses do not offer sufficient protection from shrapnel or flying debris, and do not usually protect the eyes against debris coming from the side.

Always wear safety glasses around operating robots, and any time a battery is hooked up. Moving robot mechanisms can “sneak up on you” when you do not expect it.

Wear hearing protection when using power tools such as a Dremel or grinder. It does not take much noise to cause hearing loss.

Study all safety rules carefully and constantly apply them. When in doubt about any task, get help! DO NOT take chances! (if in doubt ASK for clarification)

Read, understand and follow the safety instructions that come with your tools. Complete safety rules for power tools would take hundreds of pages, so please refer to your tool’s manual or the OSHA power tool safety guidelines at www.osha.gov.

Always dress properly for the shop. Avoid wearing loose fitting clothing, tie up or cover long hair, and remove rings and other jewelry when using power tools. Do not wear gloves when operating power tools.

Watch your hair, fingers, and tools around robots. Even the plastic gears and chains in a VEX robot can cause painful injuries if you are not careful. Long hair is especially dangerous around operating robots so keep it under control.

Be aware of what others are doing. Safety is everyone’s responsibility – both individually and collectively.

Report unsafe conditions or practices.

Keep the shop clean. Metal scraps should be disposed of in a waste bin or recycling container. Never allow scraps to remain on the bench or floor. Removing trash and debris reduces slipping and falling and generally promotes a safe work environment.

Learn how to use your tools properly. It is foolish to operate tools without first receiving proper instructions. This applies to even the small power and hand tools used in VEX robotics. Get help if you are not sure what must be done or how a task should be performed.

Keep the VEX parts out of your mouth, ears, nose, etc. It’s a robot, not a snack.

Do not short out the batteries by running a wire between the battery terminals. This can cause fire, ruined batteries, and/or explosion.

Use batteries wisely. Do not lick batteries (DA!!!), or put terminals in your mouth. If a battery appears to be leaking or has a crystalline deposit on the outside, dispose of it immediately and wear gloves – preferably made of nitrile or other non-reactive material – when handling.

Dispose of worn-out batteries responsibly and safely. Do not throw batteries into the trash, especially rechargeable batteries. Contact your local waste disposal office for information on battery disposal. Batteries should be stored as directed by your local hazardous materials disposal office until pickup, usually in a hard-sided, waterproof, non-conductive container, such as a plastic bucket.

Antennas are not a toy. Do not use them as whips or swords, and do not put them into your mouth, eyes, ears, or nose. If the blunt tip breaks off the tip of your antenna, dispose of the antenna and replace it with a new one.

Want some extra credit? Take a video with a cell phone, post it to this site and make a voice narrative of what it is, the battery/power source size and three tips you would give someone trying to pull the motor project off. Be sure to tag it somewhere as 10-135 Electric Motor Kit. You will need a computer mic to make a voice recording unless you are using an Apple computer.

What is it worth? How about up to 15 points added to your electric motor lab grade! For that you kkkkknow I will be looking for a GOOD/GREAT job!

Attention: Since many teams are still about 30 minutes from getting their motors working I will give ALL classes ONE more day to complete their electric motor kit. That means Day 1 Robotics classes will have until the END of next Thursday's class to get their team's motor purring. Day 2 Robotics classes will have until the END of next Wednesday's class to have their motor spinning away. Any teams needing more time will have to see me after school to complete their motor within a couple of days.

Hopefully you took the time and effort to take notes during class and on the day I covered most of the electrical terms??? I would review these notes or find someone who will share these notes with you.

What is the symbol of ohms?

What was that VERY large number we talked about? It was mega huge! What was it all about?

Do you know conductor and insulator?

Could you explain VOLTAGE and AMPERAGE to a 5 year old? If you can then you own these two concepts!

What is RESISTANCE? Is it like a kink in the hose or is it like the volume of water flowing from a garden hose or like the pressure of the water?

Tell me what an ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT is.
What was the voltage of the power source used in our electric motor kit?

CONTINUITY? What the heck is that?

We talked about what caused our shiny copper wire ends to turn dull and corrode. Check your notes as to what caused this chemical change.

When thinking of electricity as water flowing from a hose...... what is VOLTAGE, what is AMPERAGE and what is RESISTANCE? Which is like the volume of water flowing from a garden hose? Which is like the pressure of the water coming from the hose end? Which is similar to a kink in the hose or stepping on the middle of the hose which slows down the water coming out of the hose?

I will sadly not have the necessary time this year to actively post study guides to this blog. Nor will I have the time to monitor comments on this blog. That sadly said I will turn off the comments feature BUT will leave the old study guides up so that you can use them for the upcomming tests. Progress??? Note that this will mean the study guides will not be as pin point accurate as in years past but hopefully still a BIG help in preparing for our weekly science tests.

Due to repeated office requests I will try and post some homework to this site. Since teachers will be given some limited time to make this a reality I will try and comply. Parents can check out this blog for some of our science homework. See links below to other school sites.

Instructions for the Make-A-Test project due 2-27-09 at the BEGINNING of class. Late work = ZERO. We will work on this in computer lab FRIDAY 2-13-09. Do NOT panic but START EARLY!

Your Mission:Make up a test using vocabulary and concepts from the chapter on Cell Reproduction. You can make two questions for some of the words. Mr. Carrison’s Policy on Excuses for Technology Assignments

In the past years I have been able to verbally convey this information to my students. To make it easier for some parents and students I am taking a few minutes to try and clarify my policy on excuses for assignments requiring the use of technology. By technology I mean computers, the internet, media storage devices, printers, digital cameras, scanners, email and the like. Understand that we often use these types of assignments for review purposes ON THE DAY THEY ARE TURNED IN. If everyone had and “acceptable” (really no such thing) excuse, I could not use student work to review for tests. Factor in that I have 100+ students and it is realistically just not possible to take in assignments “when ever.” I can never remember a time that my boss was impressed with an excuse rather than the project or task that he or she had entrusted me with. These excuses seem to be remembered when you are up for a raise and/or possible promotion! As a parent of three young adults, trust me when I say that high school and college instructors simply do not accept excuses. When excuses are for sale in the Want Advertiser, Boston Globe Classified section or on eBay.com I will start giving them consideration. When and if this doubtfully ever happens, excuses possibility MIGHT then be worth something. Please start your technology projects early. You should backup to a USB drive and the computer hard disk OFTEN. I would also “orphan” a copy by sending the file to yourself in an email and NOT downloading it!

> Computers are available in other areas of school such as our school library and computer lab.
> Computers are available at the Scituate town library and all Boston libraries.
> Many homes have two or more computers, check with a relative, neighbor or friend AFTER getting your parent(s) permission - of course.

> If you wait until the last minute to complete a report – plan on the computer, printer &/or Internet to break down. No excuses are acceptable. Plan ahead! Let me repeat, No Excuses Are Acceptable!
> All my technology assignments are assigned WELL in advance, often 1 ½ weeks or more.

There are at least 4,817 excuses as to why you could not complete this assignment. Most fall in to the following major categories:

Ö “My computer is possessed and/or hates me.”
Ö “My parents/brother/sister/goldfish tied up the phone line.”
Ö “My computer crashed, died, went up in flames and/or ate my data file.”
Ö “My printer up and died” or “It’s possessed by evil beings”
Ö “The net was down” “We lost power” ”Aliens knocked out or cable or power.”
Ö “Our dog bit Comcast man and he turned off our cable to retaliate.”
Ö “My dog ate my computer, homework, internet cable and/or printer”
Ö “We do not have a computer at home.”

Computers and the Internet are still in their infancy and as such are prone to trouble. If you wait until the last minute to start this assignment you can plan on a technical malfunction. Know this and plan ahead! Unless the entire South Shore falls off the power grid for more than 48 hours… any technology orientated project or homework assigned is due on the date given.

OK, so what is a blog? It is a web site that you can easily post a comment too. Just go to the bottom of the blog, after the study guide, and click on the comment link. You can now add a comment to the blog. Your comment may be a question on one of the study guide numbered questions or it may be to answer someone else’s question.

Remember to NOT USE YOUR FULL NAME. First names are fine and you can even use your science period number of letter. If you choose to make your own blog get your parent's approval first! Again... do NOT put your address, full name or other info that would make it easy for an online weirdo stalker to track you down. Best to error on the side of caution, less is MORE!!!

In the past student have also used the blog to communicate with each other. I have no objection to this as long as it does not get in the way of the learning/studying focus of the blog.

2. Why are some materials denser than other materials? Simply put, what is the reason?

3. What are some practical uses for density?

Yipes! What a quick year, where did it go? Seems like September was only a month or so ago. As the year draws to an end I would like to thank you all for a great year. Trying to answer the questions below is an excellent way to test your knowledge on what you will find on Wednesday’s test.
